A 33-year-old Omaha woman who attempted to flee the scene of a fatal accident has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Douglas County prosecutors say Nickole Wheeler not only didn’t have a driver’s license, she didn’t know how to drive.
Still, Wheeler, fleeing from her boyfriend, decided to steal a sport utility vehicle with two men May 25th. Though she didn’t know how to drive, Wheeler got behind the wheel, drove off, and drove onto an Omaha sidewalk where she hit and killed 48-year-old Ruben Batres.
Wheeler has been sentenced for leaving the scene of a fatality, auto theft, and misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide.
Wheeler attempted to leave the scene by hitching a ride, but the driver who picked her up took her back to the scene and turned her in to police.
Under the Nebraska good-time sentencing law, Wheeler might have to only serve 2 ½ years in prison.
