Convicted murderer Anthony Garcia is sentenced to death.
He killed 11 year old Thomas Hunter and family housekeeper Shirlee Sherman in 2008 in the Dundee area of Omaha. In 2013 he killed Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife, Mary. All had ties to Creighton University’s Pathology Department where Garcia had been fired.
Garcia was also sentenced to 20 years each on weapons charges in the murder of Sherman and Hunter and up to 50 years each for the Brumback murders. Those sentences will be served consecutively.
The verdict was decided by a three judge panel that consisted of Judge Gary Randall, W. Russell Bowie and Rick Schreiner.
Judge Randal was reading the aggravating and mitigating circumstances and about half-way through the hearing he said he needed to take a break because of pain. Randall was then was taken to a hospital by ambulance. He had a procedure earlier this week that brought on back pain preventing him from continuing.
Judge Schreiner then took over the proceedings and read the verdict. The defense objected but was overruled. Garcia was then turned over to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department for execution of this sentence.
