It will be an early wakeup call on Saturday for Nebraskans who like to hunt. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission spokesperson Greg Wagner says the pickings are ripe for turkey. He says turkey populate all 93 counties in Nebraska and the counts are tremendous.
Wagner says this is the perfect time now to hunt turkey because other hunters are focusing on other waterfowl and deer. He says, “A lot of guys like to go out when the leaves start turning color in mid to late October. Or they will combine that turkey hunt which is great to do, especially a deer hunt whether it is archery, firearm or muzzleloader. You are going to see the turkey. There are in so many habitats. We have more turkeys now because of production. We have young out there more than any other time of the year.”
Nebraska is among the top 15 states in the country for the harvest of turkeys so hunters should have good luck out in the field.
There are four species of turkey in Nebraska, the Osceola, Rio Grand, Eastern and the sought after Merriam’s. The fall season runs through January 31st.
