This honor flight is just for the girls. Next Monday, September 24th, 135 female Nebraska veterans will be boarding a plane in the middle of the night and make their way to Washington DC to tour monuments and memorials. Patriotic Production’s Evonne Williams is organizing the trip and says it has been very exciting talking to and meeting our female heroes.
Williams says, “We have 98 year old woman from World War II and the youngest is 27 from Iraq and Afghanistan. We have a veteran who has been deployed four times to the Middle East. These women are gunners, driving semi-trucks across the country delivering supplies. Medics. We’ve always though traditionally of men in these roles and these are all women doing it. Women can’t be drafted so they have all volunteered.”
Two extra stops this flight include a visit to the Pentagon and the Women’s Memorials. The pre-flight dinner is Sunday, September 23rd at the Embassy Suites in La Vista. The special guest is Loretta Swit who played Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on TV’s MASH. The public is invited to the dinner and can make their reservations at patrioticproductions.org. Williams is also flying back to Washington DC with the veterans and will spend the day with them touring the city.
Williams is encouraging all Nebraskans to make the trip to Eppley Airfield for the hero’s welcome home. Bring signs, flags and get ready to welcome these veterans home. The plane is scheduled to arrive at 8:30 p.m.
