Nebraska Task Force One continues hurricane mission in North Carolina

September 17, 2018 By Karla James

Members of Nebraska Task Force One remain on the ground working in the wake of flooding from Hurricane Florence. Lincoln Fire Battalion Chief Brad Thavenet says the 44 member team assisted in getting residents of a care facility to higher ground.

Chief Thavenet says, “They spent some time assisting people and evacuating a skilled-care or nursing home. I believe that Chief Bonin told me, I saw in his report, 124 people were removed and evacuated to higher ground out of that and they made some additional contacts with other people in the area.”

The residents were then taken to a church on buses and vans once they were on dry ground.

Task Force One also assisted in several evacuations from rural areas where roads are covered with water. Rain continues in North Carolina today and rivers are expected to crest tomorrow with major flooding expected well into the week.

Members of the task force start their morning briefing at 7 a.m. and then go well into the night conducting rescues and evacuations. Members are then on a ready state to respond overnight to any emergency.  The team will remain in North Carolina until further notice.

Nebraska Task Force One is made up of firefighters from Omaha, Lincoln, Papillion and Grand Island.
