District Three engineer Kevin Domogalla says they took public input and came up with a new proposal.
“We’re going to follow the existing alignment,” Domogalla says. “Also, lower the proposed elevation. There were quite a few comments about the elevation of the new road from the last meeting that we had.”
The highway near Niobrara is threatened by continually rising water from Lewis & Clark Lake.
Domogalla says instead of moving the highway south to the face of the bluff, they plan to keep it on the same alignment, which should keep the new road out of the water.
“What we’re doing is basing it off the 100-year flood and a three-foot wave action is what we expect,” Domogalla says. “We based our elevation on that to keep the subgrade above that level.”
Domogalla says they won’t have a cost estimate for the project until a route is settled. The open house will be at Niobrara High School from 5 to 7 PM.
