Drones are becoming highly valued law enforcement and safety tools in Lancaster County.
Lincoln Public Safety Director Tom Cassidy says that the drones have multiple uses such as suspect tracking and fire observation.
He adds that with drones, county officials can get helicopter-style aerial views at a fraction of the cost.
Cassidy says Lincoln officials have been using training or “hobby drones” in operations; a far cry from the two much more advanced models being purchased by the city.
“The drones that we’ll actually be using for public safety missions are the larger more capable (models,” says Cassidy. He notes the model being purchased by Lincoln Fire and Rescue will even be able to carry a small payload.
Useful doesn’t mean cheap, however. Cassidy says the advanced drones cost somewhere between $20-Thousand and $30-thousand dollars each.
