About 20 lives are lost each month in Nebraska due to traffic accidents but there is another shocking statistic that many people don’t know about. Another 20 lives are lost each month due to suicide.
The Kim Foundation is based in Omaha and is a supportive resource and for those seeking help and for families of those with mental illness. Executive Director Julia Hebenstreit is a topic that doesn’t make the news unless it is a celebrity death like Anthony Bourdain or Kate Spade. She says, “And our hope is that conversation then continues long after because there are so many people struggling. When you look at the hotline data and see a death of a celebrity those calls increase significantly from the general public and then they realize they are not alone in this and there is help. The first step is reaching out and asking for it.”
The Kim Foundation plays an active role in policy, outreach, education and funding of organizations that provide mental health care in Nebraska. Their annual luncheon is Tuesday, October 16th and the guest speaker is mental health advocate and former Congressman Patrick Kennedy who will share his story of bipolar disorder and addiction. Tickets are still available and for more information go to thekimfoundation.org.
