Employees across Nebraska will soon decide about next year’s health benefits. There will be a lot of information to absorb so benefits expert Todd Katz advises that people take their time and look over their options carefully. Katz says while you can’t predict what will happen, you can protect yourself by using your employer benefit package in the right way.
Katz says, “First ask yourself some questions. Where am I today? What can I afford and what would happen if one of those more significant health events would happen in my life. Also ask yourself what is different this year from last year and how might that change next year. Employers every year look at their benefit programs and in many cases offer new programs that might be right to you.”
Katz says employees also need to look beyond health care at what the employer offers. That may include optical, dental and accident insurance.
Knowledge is power and Katz encourages employees to start a conversation with co-workers to get insight that could help you make better decisions.
Statics show that about 42% of employees report living paycheck to paycheck. Medical expenses are the number one source of personal bankruptcies. Katz says selecting the correct options could prevent that tragedy from happening.
Katz is the executive vice president for MetLife’s Group Benefits.
