The caravan of Central Americans heading north into Mexico and to the U.S. continues to grow. More than 7,000 people from Honduras and Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua make up that caravan saying they are escaping poverty, violence and government corruption.
President Trump threatened to cut off aid to those countries and says the caravan must be stopped. Congressman Don Bacon agrees saying, “We need rule of law. When the folks come here, they need to be detained and you cannot just release them like we have been doing for years because many of them just disappear. That is why I support our president in securing our border.”
President Trump is also blaming the Democrats for lack of immigration policies. Congressman Bacon has no idea if they are behind any of the caravan activity but says the Democrats are exploiting the country’s weakness right now. He says, “We are divided and couldn’t get Congress to move forward. There was no compromise. On this particular issue both Democrats and Republicans are going to have to have to give a little bit to move forward.”
Congressman Bacon says he voted twice in support for a wall, for more people at the border and to stop the current catch-and-release policy. He also voted for a compromise bill that included DACA youth.
A new poll shows that just over 50% of U.S. citizens surveyed agree with President Trump and the caravan must be stopped and not allowed to enter the country.
