Parishioners of St. Wenceslaus in west Omaha will hear from Archbishop George Lucas tonight on the removal of a priest from the ministry last June. Deacon Tim McNeil says Father Francis Nigli was assigned to the church in 2015.
In 2013, Nigli was accused of sexually assaulting an 18 year old when assigned to St. Patrick’s parish in O’Neill. Nigli was sent for mental health treatment and it was determined he could return to the ministry with restrictions.
Parishioners are only finding out now that Nigli was dismissed after a 21 year old reported he was sexually assaulted in Omaha. McNeil says, “He was accused of assault and police said that allegation did not arise to the level of a crime. When he was transferred it was no criminal charge and did not involve a minor. It was an infraction against another adult. Parishioners were told he was removed because of inappropriate behavior. O’Neill was told he was removed for inappropriate behavior.”
McNeil says the dismissal was not revealed because it fell into the category of sinful behavior and immoral personal conduct. He says tonight’s meeting is because people expect more and they want to assure members that all priests and church personnel will be held to an even higher standard of personal conduct.
