Mail bombs sent to prominent Democrats shook the political world.
The Justice Department reports 13 suspicious packages have been sent to various parts of the country, seeming to target Democrats who have been in the news lately, especially for their outspoken criticism of Republican President Donald Trump.
FBI agents arrested Cesar Savoc in southern Florida after finding his fingerprints and DNA on a package addressed to Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California.
Congressman Jeff Fortenberry says the country must learn to work out differences through reasoned response.
But how difficult is that today?
“We’re at a tough moment, honestly, because again the country is so divided, and some people have willingly given themselves over either to the potential for violence or speaking in violent tones or condoning political vandalism,” Fortenberry tells Nebraska Radio Network. “It’s all wrong.”
Fortenberry points out Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise was shot and wounded last year during practice for a charity softball game. He says many members of Congress and their families have received threats.
During a campaign stop in Beatrice, U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer says much is at stake.
“As a democracy, we cannot see this kind of violence take place, this kind of domestic terrorism. It has to stop,” Fischer tells Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KWBE.
Congressman Don Bacon is also worried about the present state of politics. He tells Coby Mach, host of Driver Time Lincoln on Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN political discourse must change course. Bacon says it’s a message he has delivered to President Trump, telling the president he needs to raise the bar.
“Be more diplomatic and not play to the base on some of these things,” Bacon says he told Trump. “But, on the other side, they’re just as vitriolic or more vitriolic. And so, I think that all of us on both sides need to raise the bar and be a better example.”
All of the packages containing the homemade devices were intercepted. None detonated.
