An Omaha landlord who specialized in federally-subsidized housing has been placed on one-year probation and fined $20,000 for making a false statement to federal investigators.
Seventy-four-year Lafi Jafari had been charged with bribing an inspector with the Omaha Housing Authority and agreed to a plea deal to a lesser charge.
The United States Attorney’s Office reports Jafari began bribing the inspector in 2012, giving him cash payouts ranging from $200 to $700. Jafari provided a total of $2,100 to the inspector to overlook non-compliance with Omaha Housing Authority regulations. Jafari owned 165 rental properties in Omaha, rented to low-income residents. During the period, Jafari received federal rent payments totaling nearly $2.1 million, according to the Omaha World Herald.
Jafari lied to federal investigator about whether he knew the inspector and whether he had bribed him.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General.
