While many Nebraskans have Thanksgiving off to enjoy with family and friends, physicians and nurses in emergency rooms across the state will be busy. Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Rosemary Bates says there is a significant jump in the number of visits to the ER over this holiday weekend.
Dr Bates says, “Most physician’s say there is anywhere, looking at different studies, from a 5% to 15% increase in ER visits. It can be attributed to a few very broad things. We are doing a lot of travel and that obviously can be very hazardous. You cannot believe how hazardous apparently decorating can be. Then there is overindulgence habits and their general medicals.”
Bates says emergency rooms see between 12,000 to 15,000 people each year who were injured while decorating. She says think about ladder safety, have a spotter ready and never decorate while intoxicated.
Statistics show that the number of heart attacks significantly increases during the holiday season. Second to Valentine’s Day, the holidays has the second highest suicide rate.
