A 36-year-old Bennington man who fled from a fatal car wreck in Omaha has been charged with motor vehicle homicide.
Douglas County prosecutors say Jeffrey Eggeling was driving more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit early Saturday evening when he ran a red light at the intersection of 144th and Harrison Streets in Omaha and crashed into a sport utility vehicle. The crash sent both the SUV driver, 59-year-old Clifford Canaday, and his 14-year-old son, Trevor, to the hospital with critical head injuries. Trevor died later of his injuries.
Clifford Canaday remains at Nebraska Medical Center with a fractured sternum as well as facial and internal injuries.
In addition to the motor vehicle homicide charge, Eggeling has been charged with DUI causing serious bodily injury, and failing to stop and render aid.
Police report Eggeling fled on foot from the crash site. Officers found him about two hours later. A blood test revealed a blood alcohol content of .103 hours after the wreck.
