There is plenty to do in the great outdoors this weekend. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission spokesperson Greg Wagner says conditions are ideal for hunters. He says there is plenty of snow cover and it isn’t too cold. Muzzle loader deer hunters should have good success and they are easy to track with the snow. The Canadian geese population is plentiful right now and we haven’t reached the season’s peak. Wagner says conditions are excellent for hunting all waterfowl.
Those itching to ice fish will have to wait a while to put up the hut. Wagner says, “It is too early for ice fishing. There is no safe ice. Duluth, Minnesota has had some trouble with people getting on icebergs. The early ice is some of the best for fishing but it isn’t worth your life.”
Winter outdoor sporting continues to grow and Wagner says conditions are ideal now for cross-country skiing.
There is a family fun event at Mahoney State Park near Ashland. Game and Parks is hosting a Christmas party with Santa, cookie decorating, photos and more. It runs from 1:30 until 4:30.
