According to a Nebraska athletic department press release, Nebraska will pay Akron a total of $650,000 for the game which was scheduled to take place on September 1st, 2018. Nebraska had agreed to pay Akron $1.17 million back in 2014; however the game was cancelled due to severe weather, the first time in program history a Husker football game had been cancelled for weather related issues.
“We are pleased to finalize an agreement with Akron that is beneficial for both institutions,” Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos said in a press release. That same press release also revealed that the Zips and the Huskers will meet in September of 2025 for Nebraska’s home opener. “We have had good dialogue with Akron during this process and are appreciative of the cooperation and patience from everyone involved,” Moos said. “We look forward to Akron making a return trip to Memorial Stadium in 2025.”
Akron will receive a guaranteed $1.45 million for the 2025 game. Before the Huskers host the Zips, Nebraska will kick-off the 2025 season at Illinois on August 30th. Then after the Akron game, the Huskers will be back on the road to take on Cincinnati on September 13th.
