A patient at the Lincoln Regional Center found not guilty of killing six Nebraskans by reason of insanity will remain in its custody.
Erwin Charles Simants, now 72, has undergone his annual competency evaluation in Lincoln County District Court, though Simants didn’t attend. In 1975, when Simants was 29, he killed Henry and Audrey Marie Kellie as well as their son, David, and three of their grandchildren, Florence, Deanna, and Daniel in the Kellies’ home in Sutherland.
District Judge Michael Piccolo has ruled Simants remains mentally ill and dangerous. He has ordered Simants to remain in residential treatment.
