The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office will investigate a shooting this weekend in Lincoln in which two Lincoln police officers were wounded as well as a Lincoln resident.
Lincoln police say the two officers responded to a reported disturbance involving a man with a knife around 2:30 Saturday morning. A fight began at the residence in the 3200 block of South 48th Street. Twenty-five-year-old Officer Kyle Russell sustained a stab wound to his upper right chest which wasn’t protected by his safety vest. Thirty-six-year-old Officer Joshua Atkinson sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Forty-three-year-old Christopher Brennauer was shot in the shoulder.
Russel was treated at a local hospital and released on Sunday. Atkinson has had surgery and remains hospitalized. Brennauer remains hospitalized in critical, but stable condition, according to Lincoln police.
Russell has been on the Lincoln police force for two years; Atkinson for 10.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s investigators are leading the investigating into the shooting. The Lincoln Police Department says it will conduct its own investigation to determine if the officers followed proper procedures.
