Officers arrested a 30-year-old Broken Bow man, cold and wounded, after a chase punctuated by gun fire which began late New Year’s Eve, ending during the early morning hours of New Year’s Day in rural Howard County.
Luke Lefever faces numerous charges after the pursuit which began when Howard County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to pull him over near the intersection of Dannevirke Road and Page Road north of Elba.
The Nebraska State Patrol says Lefever pulled a handgun on the deputies and exchanged gunfire. Lefever managed to get into a sheriff’s patrol car and fled south on Page Road. He also grabbed the shotgun in the cruiser.
The cruiser spun out of control. Lefever again shot at the deputies who returned fire. He then fled on foot.
St. Paul Police Department officers joined in on the pursuit. They did not discharge their weapons.
Elba Fire and Rescue and St. Paul Rescue also assisted in the incident.
Nebraska State Patrol troopers joined the search, along with deputies from the Howard County, Merrick County, and Sherman County Sheriff’s Offices as well as the St. Paul police officers.
NSP brought in its SWAT with a light armored vehicle as well as a helicopter, which spotted Lefever in a creek bed east of Page Road. An NSP K9 helped take Lefever into custody. Officers found a shotgun at the scene and found Lefever with a gunshot wound to his left forearm. He showed signs of hypothermia.
He was taken to the St. Paul hospital for treatment, then transferred to a Lincoln hospital.
No officers suffered injuries in the shootout.
