The attorney for two surgeons suing Children’s Hospital and Medical Center say they were forced to resign and wrongfully suspended for raising concerns about patient safety.
Thomas White is the attorney for Dr.’s Mark Puccioni and Jason Miller were upset about the death of a 7 month old baby following brain surgery by another doctor. White describes the surgery by saying, “He opens up the baby’s brain. Makes an incision and loses control of the bleeding. He pours hydrogen peroxide into the open skull of the brain of the baby which is not surgically, under any circumstance, appropriate.
White says Dr. Puccioni is horrified and writes a letter to the administration saying there is a problem. Dr. Miller also writes a letter voicing his concerns and two days later both are suspended. Ten surgeons resigned from the hospital following that action.
Children’s Hospital President, Dr. Richard Azizkahn is named in the lawsuit along with the other surgeon. Prior to coming to Omaha, Dr. Azizkahn was at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He is named as a defendant in 528 lawsuits filed there based on one physician that was under his direction. Last month, a jury ordered that hospital to pay the family of one patient $2 million for injuries suffered during spinal surgery.
Children’s Hospital in Omaha says they strongly disagree with the allegations and stand behind the medical team, the CEO and their processes.
