The partial federal government shutdown is in day 26 and there is no sign of it ending anytime soon. At issue is President Trump’s request for $5.7 billion in funding to pay for a wall along the U.S. – Mexico border. Democrats oppose the project and refuse to appropriate any funding for the project.
Congressman Don Bacon says the only end to the shutdown will a compromise. He says, “We have seen some, a congresswoman from California, we are seeing a few saying that a targeted steel barrier or wall at certain parts of the border is not a bad thing. So there is a little bit there but unfortunately it is going to take Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Shumer to get off of this ‘not a single dollar’.”
Congressman Bacon says they have offered zero compromise during the shutdown. He says President Trump has offered to go half-way and has invited bi-partisan groups to the White House to discuss the issue and only Republicans have shown up.
Congressman Bacon says the U.S. House continues to do these “show votes” and they have no chance of even getting to first base in the U.S. Senate or signed by the president. He believes the only solution to the problem would before Pelosi to meet with President Trump and negotiate at the table to find a common ground and that isn’t happening.
