Flames and smoke could be seen from blocks away coming from the Hope of Glory Church in north Omaha Monday evening.
The fire was reported around 6 p.m. It took firefighters about an hour to get it under control. Pastor Bruce Williams bought the church that dates back to the 1920’s last April and was in the process of rebuilding an active congregation.
Pastor Williams says, “Most of the damage was confined to the upstairs portion of the church. Of course they had to use a lot of water to get the fire out so there is a lot of water damage. We plan to rebuild and get it back together. The fire caused an estimated $75,000 in damage to the building alone.
There were members in the fellowship hall at the time but everyone made it out safely. Williams says most items on the first level were destroyed he feels fortunate that much of the lower level remained dry and items can be salvaged. Reconstruction teams arrived this morning and Williams hopes to the rebuilding process will start soon.
