Wymore Assistant Fire Chief Mark Meints says the storm also brought winds up to 85 miles an hour and very large hail, up to tennis ball-sized.
One report from the Beatrice area says hail was two inches deep. Damage is still being assessed to trees, homes, crops and utilities.
Chief Meints says the twister was spotted in southern Gage County.
“On Highway 112 and West Pine, a couple of our trained spotters by the fire department actually saw a funnel come down and actually did touch down in front of them and then it sucked back up,” he says.
Meints says the storm played havoc with electric lines — at one point, making street lamps in Wymore act like strobe lights.
Tornado warnings were issued late yesterday in Thayer, Jefferson, Gage and Pawnee counties.
