Demorrio Williams, a linebacker who led the Chiefs in tackles in 2009, was released after four seasons with the Chiefs. Williams was was one of the Chiefs’ top special teams players the past two seasons, but moved into a backup role in the linebacker position the past two seasons after he was beaten out for a starting job by Derrick Johnson.
Bob Karmelowicz, who was a defensive line coach with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1997-2005 died Saturday, following a battle with sinus cancer. He was 60. During an 18 year career in the NFL, Karmelowicz worked with the defensive line for five NFL teams: Detroit Lions (2009), Houston Texans (2006-08), Kansas City Chiefs (1997-05), Washington Redskins (1994-96) and Cincinnati Bengals (1992-93).
The NFL’s third leading rusher last season is now with the Chiefs. Thomas Jones who has rushed for 1,000 yards or more for the past five seasons was cut by the Jets last week. Jones will be a good tandem with Jamaal Charles who ran for over 1,100 yards last season.
Why not just call them the West New England Chiefs? GM Scott Pioli, who helped build New England’s Super Bowl teams, completed his daily double of coordinators by hiring Romeo Crennel as the Chiefs new defensive coordinator. This comes a week after Pioli and head coach Todd Haley named Charlie Weis as the offensive coordinator.
The Chiefs made it official this afternoon that Charlie Weis will become the Chiefs’ new offensive coordinator. Earlier this week, Haley wouldn’t come out and say for sure that Weis was the guy, but you could tell this was the direction they were headed. There was a rumor it could happen yesterday, but I’m thinking they waited until the BCS title game was complete.
The big man could be up in the booth next season calling the Chiefs offensive plays. Charlie Weis, the former Notre Dame head coach and offensive coordinator at New England could be announced as the Chiefs offensive coordinator as early as today.
Jamaal Charles appears to be the guy the Chiefs can build their franchise around. The second year player out of Texas ran for a Chiefs-record 259 yards on 25 carries and linebacker Derrick Johnson returned two interceptions off Denver quarterback Kyle Orton for touchdowns as the Chiefs bounced the Broncos from any chance at the playoffs in a 44-24 Chiefs win in Denver.
